Istanbul Street training photography
“Istanbul is one of the most photogenic cities I’ve ever visited. Given its astonishing history there is no shortage of subjects to photograph. The images produced here are the culmination of a three day Istanbul street training photography trip to the city centre. We also visited the surrounding area, bazaars and mosques.”
The places, people and dimly lit passages were a rich source of inspiration for my reportage street photography. Istanbul’s numerous bazaars are the perfect backdrop for documentary street photography and although geared more to the tourist than local trade, the markets are nevertheless full of things to see and record with your camera.
The Spice Bazaar is more heavily geared to the tourist but still has a diversity that gives endless opportunities. The Grand Bazaar is significantly larger and services both local and tourist markets a myriad of halls and passages where you’ll find traders selling anything and everything imaginable.
“I was able to capture the colour and atmosphere of the people engaged in their day to day business and lives. We spent the early morning visiting the more orthodox mosques. We found little resistance to photographing men taking their daily prayers although one must always respect where you are and be discreet and quiet whilst documenting and photographing their lives.”
